Lesson 3 - Sound waves
Previous lesson
Next lesson
Objective
In this lesson students are introduced to sound as a wave. Through teacher demonstrations and through question and answer discussion they see that sound cannot propagate with a physical medium. The distinction with light will be mentioned but further discussion held over until lesson 8.
Prescribed Focus Area Skills Development Content

P2 A student applies the processes that are used to test and validate models, theories and laws of science with particular emphasis on first-hand investigations in physics

P14 Students draw valid conclusions from gathered data and information

D1.3 Students learn to identify that mechanical waves require a medium for propagation while electromagnetic waves do not (ref. Lesson 8)
D2.1 … identify that sound waves are vibrations or oscillations of particles in a medium
D2.4 … explain an echo as a reflection of a sound wave (ref. Lesson 9)

Activity Resources Homework
  • Teacher demonstration - Clock & Bell Jar
  • Tuning fork in water, wood air.
  • Sound reflection - "Hall of whispers".

Management issues Nominal duration
This lesson structured around a teacher-led question and answer session. Students will be asked to hypothesise about the expected outcomes of various experiments and to relate the demonstrations to their everyday experiences.
