| Objective | ||
| In this lesson the focus shifts from sound as an example of wave motion to light, and electromagnetic radiation in general, as another example of a wave phenomenon. This lesson will focus on how we have come to know that light is a transverse electromagnetic wave that travels at a finite speed without the need for a medium starting with early theories of light and leading to Maxwell's theory and Hertz's demonstration. | ||
| Prescribed Focus Area | Skills Development | Content |
P1 A student outlines the historical development of major principles, concepts and ideas in physics. |
P12.3 Students gather information from secondary sources |
D1.3 Students learn to identify that mechanical waves require a medium for propagation while electromagnetic waves do not |

|
Write a short essay, use the Internet as a source, on how light was discovered to be a transverse electromagnetic wave. |

| This class will probably be conducted in the school computer lab. Students can work in small groups, or individually, depending on the number of PCs available. The lesson could be split into a number of separate periods if required by timetable constraints. | 2 hours |
