Dear Collegue, I would be grateful if you could bring this notice to the attention of anyone in your department who might be interested. Cheers, Mick Pope -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UniServe*Science DRY LABS WORKSHOP 12th April 1996, University of Sydney FIRST CALL FOR REGISTRATION. This is the First Call for registration for the workshop. A second call will be made in the first week of March, followed by the full program at the end of March. Workshop Theme: This worshop is designed to explore the issues surrounding the replacement of the traditional “wet labs” with “dry labs”, where some of these labs cot of simulated laboratory experiences, and some are structured tutorials (often computer managed). Questions to be addressed are those which are common to all the sciences and include: logistics and problems involved with set-up, teaching effectiveness and student response and the intellectual appropriateness of this approach. The speakers for the workshop sessions are individuals who have had experience in the replacement and/or design of such computer based material. Cost: This first workshop is offered free of charge, and is sponsered by UniServe*Science. Time Table: 9:30-11:00am Welcome Keynote Talks - Multimedia issues and scientific concerns 11:00-11:30am Morning Tea 11:30-1:30pm Sessions A & B 1:30-2:30pm Lunch 2:30-4:30pm Sessions C & D 4:30-5:00pm Summary discussion Sessions: A: Dry Labs in a Chemistry Department B: Dry Labs in a Biology Department C: Dry Labs in Biochemistry Departments D: Dry Labs in a Geology Department (TBC) Individuals who have agreed so far to contribute to these sessions include: Rob Capon, Audrey Wilson, Fred Pamula, Mark Arundel, Michael Nott. Travel Support: Some support is available for those travelling to the workshop, sponsored by UniServe*Science. The amount of this support is limited to $100 each to attendees from Victoria, remote NSW and south Queensland; and $200 for attendees from further afield. Note that travel support is against airfares only. Depending on demand, the number of subsidies from any one department may have to be limited. At the Australasian Deans of Science Conference in September 1995, there was wide-spread approval for the idea of workshops like this, and agreement that academics attending would need financial support. Your Dean has been advised that this workshop is to be run. If you are in need of support to allow you to attend you might apply to your faculty.
