Michael joined the Academic Development Unit at La Trobe University in November, 1993 as its first Director.

Michael's academic development activities focus on issues to do with the improvement of teaching, learning and evaluation in higher education. He is also interested in criteria used to judge good teaching in areas such as tenure and promotion.

His research interests are also in the area of teaching and learning. In particular, he is interested in how students and staff approach their teaching and learning, how these approaches are related to the ways in which they perceive the teaching and learning context and conceive of the tasks in which they are engaged. He has a number of publications and research grants in this area.
