Dr Paul Francis has been an astrophysicist at the Australian National University since 1995. He obtained a PhD from the University of Cambridge, and has worked with NASA, at the University of Arizona and at the University of Melbourne. He has used many of the world's greatest telescopes to study quasars and the formation of galaxies.
Paul has been experimenting with new and bizarre ways of teaching physics and astronomy for a number of years. His particular interests include classroom role-playing games and problem-based learning. He is currently experimenting with video games as a teaching tool, and the use of virtual reality in developing spatial skills. Paul won the 1999 "Fresh Science" prize for science communication, the 2000 ANU Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the 2000 ANU Flexible Learning fellowship.
