Faculty and University School elections 2018

Staff and student elections to faculties, faculty boards, University schools and University school boards

At the beginning of 2017 the University simplified its organisational structure and in doing so established a new Governance Rule. The University of Sydney (Governance of Faculties and University Schools) Rule 2016 (the Rule) provides a new governance framework for the following faculties and University schools:

  • Faculties: Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, The University of Sydney Business School, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies, the Faculty of Medicine and Health, the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Science
  • University schools: Sydney School of Architecture, Design & Planning, Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Sydney Law School

Elections for staff and student members

The Rule requires faculties and University schools to set up faculty boards and University school boards, and calls for the election of staff and/or students to fill positions on these bodies.

A faculty board or a University school board is responsible for academic decision-making. It includes ex-officio members, elected academic staff, elected or appointed professional staff and elected student members, as advised below.

A faculty or a University school is a consultative forum that can, for example, receive and consider reports on academic matters and make recommendations on academic matters to the faculty board/University school board.

With the exception of the Faculty of Medicine and Health (which was formally established in April 2018), elections were conducted in Semester 2, 2017 for academic and professional staff membership of faculty boards and University school boards. These elections were for a two year term of office commencing 1 January 2018 through 31 December 2019.

In 2018, the following elections will be conducted:

  • the election of academic and professional staff members of the faculty board for the Faculty of Medicine and Health; and
  • the election of student members of all faculties, faculty boards, University schools and University school boards

for a term of office commencing on 1 January 2019 through 31 December 2019.

Staff elections are not required for membership of faculties, University schools or University school boards as all eligible staff are automatically included as members of these bodies.

The conduct of all of these elections is governed by the Election Procedures 2017.

Elections timeline

The Rule establishes timelines for the conduct of elections.

For the 2018 elections, the call for nominations for available positions will commence on Monday 13 August 2018 and closed at 4pm on Monday 27 August 2018. All nominations will need to be supported by two other persons who are also eligible to nominate in the election (that is, academic staff supporting academic nominees, professional staff supporting professional nominees, and students within a faculty or University school supporting student nominees in that faculty or University school).

If at the close of nominations there are an equal number or fewer nominees than positions available, the nominees will be declared elected unopposed. If there are more nominations received than positions available, these elections will proceed to ballot.

If required to proceed to ballot, a preferential electronic ballot will be held commencing on Monday 10 September 2018. All ballots are to be returned by 4pm on Monday 24 September 2018. Members of each electorate proceeding to ballot will be contacted directly by the University Secretariat to advise on the voting process.
