Sydney Emerging Infections and Biosecurity Institute
Globally, emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases are major causes of morbidity and mortality, socioeconomic disruption and economic instability. Expert knowledge and input are essential for governments to effectively anticipate, control or reduce the impact of future epidemic infections.
The Sydney Emerging Infections and Biosecurity (SEIB) Institute is committed to meeting the challenge of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, by:
- Leading in cross-disciplinary research into emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases
- Increasing capacity within Australia and Asia Pacific nations to detect and respond to infectious disease outbreaks in humans and animals
- Informing and assisting in the development of policies and strategies to prevent, contain and control emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases
SEIB facilitates cross-disciplinary research into emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases; assists capacity development within Australia and Asia Pacific nations to detect and respond to infectious disease outbreaks in humans and animals; informs and assists in the development of policies and strategies to prevent, contain and control emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.
The Sydney Infectious Diseases and Biosecurity Research Network (SIBRN) was established in 2012 as part of a University of Sydney initiative to improve cross-faculty collaboration. It involves the creation of two infectious diseases interest hubs outside of Medicine and Veterinary Science, one within the Natural Sciences and one with the Humanities, to increase the scope of SEIB's collaborations and research activities.
