His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh, 1954

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh visited New Zealand, Australia and Ceylon in 1954. During the tour, His Royal Highness visited the University of Sydney on 4 February 1954.

Senate's Loyal Address to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Senate approved the following draft of the Loyal Address to Her Majesty the Queen to be presented to His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh on the occasion of his visit to the University on 4 February 1954:

"To Her Meet Gracious Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by the Grace of God the Queen of this Realm and all Her other Realms and Territories, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, Supreme Liege Lady in and over the Commonwealth of Australia.

May it please Your Majesty: —

We, the Chancellor and Fellows of the Senate, the Professors and Lecturers, Heads of Colleges, Graduates and other Members of the University of Sydney, desire to present our most humble and sincere assurances of steadfast allegiance and unswerving loyalty to Your Majesty upon the auspicious occasion of Your Majesty's visit to Sydney.

We rejoice in the opportunity of meeting His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh whose presence at the University affords an other sure testimony of that unfailing interest in our welfare which has been most graciously manifested by the Royal Family ever since our foundation more than a century ago and has provided a continued source of inspiration and encouragement to succeeding generations of teachers and scholars. We rejoice, too, in the thought that the visit of His Royal Highness, as Chancellor of the Universities of Edinburgh and Wales, will draw still closer the bonds that unite us to the Universities of Great Britain, both old and new, and give us added strength to share with them the tasks and responsibilities inseparable from the pursuit and spreading of knowledge.

It is our earnest prayer that the University of Sydney may continue to play its full part in contributing to the advancement of sound learning and to the welfare of the Commonwealth throughout Your Majesty's reign, which God grant may be long, peaceful and prosperous."

Response from the Queen's Secretary

In May 1954 a letter was received from the Queen's Secretary conveying to the members of the University of Sydney Her Majesty's warm thanks for their Address of Loyalty on the occasion of her visit to Australia.
