Honorary awards

George Faunce Allman

The honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred upon George Faunce Allman on 4 October 1961.


Dr Allman has devoted his entire life to musical studies, practice and development. His connection with the University has been a long-standing one. He was conductor of the Sydney University Musical Society for thirty years from 1928, and was appointed University Organist in 1936. He has been conductor of the Sydney University Graduates' Choir since 1952 and he was one of the founders of the Musical Association of New South Wales and is its Past President. He has been an examiner of the Australian Musical Examinations Board since 1915. Dr Allman has maintained musical activity amongst the undergraduates over many years and his musical scholarship has inspired many students. Some of the colleges, especially Wesley and the Women's College, are indebted to him.
