Honorary awards

Helen Elizabeth Archdale

The honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred upon Miss Helen Elizabeth (Betty) Archdale by the Chancellor Sir Hermann Black at a special conferring of degrees ceremony held at 6.00pm on Thursday 2 May 1985 which celebrated the centenary of the first graduations by women at the University of Sydney.

Miss Archdale, the former headmistress of Abbotsleigh, and for 25 years a member of this University's Senate, had recently been appointed to the Council of Macquarie University.

The other four women awarded honorary degrees at the ceremony were Dr Margaret Mulvey, Ms Edna Ryan, Dr Grace Warren and Justice Elizabeth Evatt.
