Emeritus Professor John Dunston
The honorary degree of Doctor of Letters was conferred upon Emeritus Professor John Dunston, former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University, by the Chancellor Sir Hermann Black at a conferring of degrees ceremony held in the Great Hall on 27 May 1987.
Emeritus Professor John Dunston was the University's longest serving Professor of Latin, coming to the University in 1953 from Reading University in England. He was Dean of the Faculty of Arts for six years and held the position of acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor on many occasions prior to concluding his formal career here as Deputy Vice-Chancellor from 1982 to 1986.
