Honorary awards

John Douglas Gordon

The honorary degree of Master of Music was conferred upon John Douglas Gordon in May 1984 for his achievements as performer, composer and teacher.

Mr Gordon, who had his first lesson on the Carillon on 3 May 1932 as an undergraduate student, was appointed University Carillonist in July 1944. He remained University Carillonist until his death in 1991.

'A unique blend of sanity, fine musicianship and kindliness, imparting both enthusiasm and sound knowledge' was how Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Taylor, described his teaching. The playing looked 'rather like one of the more vigorous martial arts'.
