John Newbold Hazard

At a conferring of degrees ceremony held in the Great Hall in 1986, the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred upon John Newbold Hazard.

Mr Hazard, AB Yale LLB Harvard JSD Chicago, was a leading American scholar of Soviet law and public administration. He was the founder of the field of Soviet legal studies in the United States and the author of many widely used textbooks and studies on this topic. He taught at Columbia University for nearly half a century and helped to found the Russian Institute (now the Harriman Institute), the first academic centre in America dedicated to Russian and Soviet studies.
