Dr George Mackaness OBE
The honorary degree of Doctor of Science was conferred upon Dr George Mackaness OBE, BE MA DLitt Sydney LittD Melb, a former President of the Royal Australian Historical Society, on 11 April 1961.
Dr Mackaness graduated from this University Master of Arts in 1911 and Doctor of Letters in 1944. He also holds the degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of Melbourne where he held the Harbison-Higinbotham Research Fellowship.
Dr Mackaness was Head of the Department of English in the Sydney Teachers' College from 1924 to 1946 and has played a leading part in the teaching of English in the State. He has been the author of a number of educational textbooks and has made great contributions in the field of scientific Australian bibliography.
Amongst wide activities in the fields of literature and history, he has been the State representative on the Advisory Board of the Commonwealth Literary Fund since 1938, the President of the Royal Australian Historical Society in 1948 and 1949 and a Trustee of the Public Library from 1936.
