Honorary awards

Dr Ian Murray Mackerras

The degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) was conferred upon Dr Ian Murray Mackerras at a Conferring of Degrees Ceremony held in the Great Hall on Saturday 5 June 1971.


Dr Mackerras, a graduate of this University, was the first Director of the Queensland Institute of Medical Research, holding the position from 1947 to 1961. Later, whilst with the CSIRO Division of Entomology he was editor of the textbook "The Insects of Australia". He served in the First World War and in the Second World War was Director of Entomology with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel.
