Honorary awards

Sir Leslie Harold Martin CBE

At a conferring of degrees ceremony on 3 May 1966, the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) was conferred upon Sir Leslie Harold Martin CBE, DSc Melbourne, Queensland, ANU & UNSW LLD WAust PhD Camb, FRS FAA FInstP, physicist, Higher Education Advisor and Chairman of the Australian Universities Commission since 1959.

Martin had been Lecturer and Associate Professor in Natural Philosophy, and then Professor of Physics at the University of Melbourne from 1927 to 1959. For his work in education and defence he was made a Companion of the Order of the British Empire in 1954 and he was knighted in 1957 to honour his outstanding contributions to science.
