Emeritus Professor Mayes, who came to Sydney University as an undergraduate because Queensland University then had no medical school, graduated MB BS in 1927 with First Class Honours.

He was appointed Professor of Obstetrics in 1941 and was also Dean of the Faculty in the 1950s.

A major figure in obstetrics and gynaecology in Australia, he was instrumental in having the teaching of Gynaecology combined with
the teaching of Obstetrics.

In 1950 he wrote and published his famous Textbook of Obstetrics, which became the standard undergraduate text for medical students throughout Australia and in much of the English-speaking world.
