Rowan Nicks OBE
At a conferring of degrees ceremony held in the Great Hall on 9 February 1985, the honorary degree of Doctor of Medicine was conferred upon Rowan Nicks OBE, MB MS NZ, FRCA (Edin) FRCS (Eng) FRACS.
Since his appointment in 1956 as the first full-time cardio-thoracic surgeon at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Mr Nicks maintained a close relationship with the University Department of Surgery and held the post of Lecturer in Cardio-thoracic Surgery, part-time, at the University. He also helped establish the Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin. Throughout his active surgical career and since his retirement he took a particular interest in caring for the sick in underdeveloped countries and, in particular, India, Malaysia and Uganda.
