In presenting Mrs O'Neil for the conferring of her title by the Chancellor Sir Hermann Black, the Vice-Chancellor Professor John
Ward referred to her work for the Settlement, the University Women's Group, the Women's Auxiliary of International House, the Friends of the Library and the Chancellor's Committee.

'All these things she has done with grace and good humour', he said, 'never seeking for herself any satisfaction greater than that of knowing that good work has been done where it has been needed.'
