At a conferring of degrees ceremony held in the Great Hall on 18 May 1983, the centenary year of the Faculty of Engineering, the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering was conferred upon His Excellency Air Marshall Sir James Anthony Rowland KBE DFC AFC KStJ, BE Sydney, FRAeS HonFIEAust.

Chief of Air Staff, RAAF (1975-79), in 1983 Sir James was Governor of NSW, the Visitor of the University and Patron of the Warren Centre Appeal.
