Emeritus Professor John Manning Ward

Emeritus Professor John Manning Ward, retired Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney, received the degree of Doctor of the University at the conferring of degrees ceremony on 16 March 1990 in recognition of his long years of service and scholarship.

Professor Ward was Challis Professor of History berween 1949 and 1979, and filled successively more senior posts as Chairman of the Professorial and Academic Boards, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and, finally, Vice-Chancellor.

In his citation the current Vice-Chancellor Professor Don McNicol praised John Ward's 'steady hand, calm confidence and historian's
sense of perspective (which) guided his actions and responses' as he handled the difficult challenges faced by the University during his term of office.
