Chancellor

I have the honour to present Professor John Wong for admission to the degree of Doctor of Medicine (honoris causa).

Professor Wong is currently Professor of Surgery and Head of Department at the University of Hong Kong, Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Queen Mary's Hospital, Hong Kong, Honorary Consultant Surgeon to the Hong Kong Government and Honorary Consultant in Surgery to the Hong Kong Hospital Authority.

Professor Wong had a distinguished undergraduate career at the University of Sydney graduating with first class honours in both BSc(Med) and MB BS, and following this with a PhD. He completed his surgical training and worked until 1979 in the University's Department of Surgery. Professor Wong then returned to Hong Kong where he developed many areas of surgery, particularly oesophogeal, vascular and liver surgery.

Since his appointment to the Chair of surgery within the University of Hong Kong, succeeding Professor G BOng, he has continued to be the centre of academic surgery in Hong Kong. Professor Wong has a truly international role in world surgery. The honours bestowed on him include an Honorary Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons and membership of the General Motors Cancer Research Committee. He has developed close relationships with the People's Republic of China and is a Member of the Council of Shantou University.

Professor Wong has been a generous and loyal supporter of the University of Sydney. Much of the credit for the establishment of the University of Sydney Alumni Association of Hong Kong goes indisputably to Professor Wong. Professor Wong served as its inaugural President for two years and, as Honorary Adviser, is the inspiration behind the Alumni Association. In August 1989 Professor Wong proposed a scholarship program for Hong Kong students. His suggestion launched this University's Alumni Scholarship program in partnership with alumni associations in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.

In 1991 Professor Wong initiated and arranged the first University of Sydney graduation in Hong Kong.

Chancellor, I have the honour to present Professor John Wong for admission to the degree of Doctor of Medicine (honoris causa).
