Wallace Charles Wurth CMG

The degree of Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) was conferred upon Wallace Charles Wurth CMG, the Chancellor of the University of New South Wales, at a special meeting of Senate held on 29 April 1959 in the Great Hall.


Mr Wallace Charles Wurth has had a distinguished career, characterised by service to the State of a very high order. He was educated at Sydney High School and in the Faculty of Law at the University of Sydney. In 1932 he was appointed Industrial Registrar and Assistant Under-Secretary in the Department of Labour and Industry and in 1939 he became Chairman of the Public Service Board. During the Second World War Mr Wurth was Director-General of Manpower and carried the responsibility for mobilising, under circumstances of great urgency, the manpower resources of the Commonwealth. When it was decided to establish a second University in New South Wales, Mr Wurth was an active member of the University Developmental Committee and in 1949 became its first President and Chancellor.
