Professor Donald McNicol was Vice-Chancellor and Principal and Fellow of Senate of the University of Sydney from 1990 - 1996.

Professor McNicol, an experimental psycholgist, was Commissioner for Universities with the Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission between 1986 and 1988 and then Vice-Chancellor of the University of New England before becoming the sixth full-time Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney in 1990.
He was Vice-President of the AVCC in 1993 and President from 1994 - 1995.
When he left the University of Sydney in 1996, he became Vice-Chancellor of the University of Tasmania until his retirement on 2 August 2002.
Professor McNicol became a Fellow of the Association for Tertiary Education Management in 2002 and has served as Commissioner for Universities and Chair of the Universities Council, Commonwealth Tertiary Education Commission. He has been a member of the Migrant Resource Centre Board (Southern Tasmania) since 2009, is the Convenor of the MRC Board Development Group and Deputy Chairman of Optia Incorporated.
