Adjunct Professor (12 months or more) - title


Information, policy and procedures:

  • Adjunct Professorial titles may be conferred on persons who are expert in an appropriate field and who are contributing significantly to teaching and/or research and/or who are fostering partnerships between the University and industry, the profession or the wider community.
  • The Chair Appointments Committee has delegated authority to confer the title of Adjunct Professor for a period of 12 months or more.

Challis Professor:

Challis Professor - title


Information, policy and procedures:

  • In 1880 John Henry Challis bequeathed his residuary real and personal estate to the University of Sydney “to be applied for the benefit of that Institution in such manner as the governing body thereof shall direct.” (pdf) The Challis bequest
  • Vacant Challis chairs are filled by the serving professor when the department does not wish to advertise.
  • The Chair Appointments Committee has delegated authority to confer the title of Challis Professor following the recommendation of the Dean of the appropriate Faculty.

Clinical Professor (12 months or more)


Information, policy and procedures:

  • Clinical academic titles may be conferred primarily on salaried staff and visiting staff of teaching hospitals and on other health professionals who meet teaching needs, on a regular basis, which the University may not otherwise satisfy and who may also contribute to the University’s research activities.
  • The Chair Appointments Committee has delegated authority to confer the title of Clinical Professor for a period of twelve months or more.

Conjoint Professor - title


Information, policy and procedures:

  • Conjoint academic titles may be conferred on successful applicants for positions advertised conjointly by the University and external bodies, e.g. an Area Health Service or a research institute that has been formally recognised by the University as being affiliated with a Faculty.
  • Conjoint academic titles may be also conferred on persons already in a post (e.g. existing staff of an Area Health Service or existing staff of a research institute that has entered into an agreement with the University) provided they undertake to contribute to teaching, research and University, professional and community service and provided this meets with the approval of the external body.
  • Conjoint academic titles may, in addition, be conferred on NHMRC, ARC and other holders of nationally competitive peer-reviewed fellowships who undertake to contribute to undergraduate teaching and/or to postgraduate research supervision and/or to service to the University, the profession and the wider community, but only on appointment to the University.
  • The Chair Appointments Committee has delegated authority to confer the title of Conjoint Professor.

McCaughey Professor

McCaughey Professor - title:

  • A large bequest from Samuel McCaughey (1919) enabled the appointment of new Professors and Associate Professors in Arts, Engineering, Medicine, and Dentistry. (pdf)

Professor - 'Out of round' promotion:


Information, policy and procedures:

  • This policy which was approved by the Academic Board permits a Head, Dean, Director, the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor or the Vice-Chancellor to initiate an out of rounds promotion procedure where a valuable staff member has been offered an appointment at another institution and the University wishes to offer promotion as a retention strategy.

  • Applications for promotion are called for annually in the first half of the year, however some Faculties may elect to hold a second round in the second half of the year for promotions below Level E. In special circumstances, ‘out of round’ promotions may be considered (see above).

  • University Chairs have been established to recognise and reward members of University staff who are internationally acknowledged scholars of exceptional distinction or to attract such scholars to the University.

University Professorial Fellow

Visiting Professor (12 months or more) - title


Information, policy and procedures:

  • A Visiting Professor is expected to make a significant contribution to the teaching and/or research/scholarship/creative work of the University.
  • The Chair Appointments Committee has delegated authority to confer the title of Visiting Professor on a Professor from another university, or a person with equivalent status, who is visiting a School.
