Senate made the following decisions at its meeting held in open session on 6 December 2010:


A

Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering Foundation:
Senate resolved to terminate the Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering Foundation pursuant to Rule 5.1 of the Foundation Rules.

Chair Appointments Committee:
Senate appointed the following Fellows to fill two vacancies on Senate’s Chair Appointments Committee: Mrs Dorothy Hoddinott and Mr David Turner.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences:
Senate approved amendments to the Senate Resolutions relating to the Constitution of the Faculty of Arts — with effect from 1 January 2011, noting that the Faculty will be renamed the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and incorporate the discipline of Economics, the Centre for International Security Studies and the Graduate School of Government – currently all in the Faculty of Economics and Business.

Fellows of Senate:
Senate welcomed Mr Benjamin Veness, undergraduate student, and Ms Chirine Dada, postgraduate student, as new Fellows of Senate.

Governance of Faculties, Colleges, College Boards, Departments, Schools and Committees:
Senate approved amendments in relation to the Faculty of Arts to the Senate Resolutions relating to the Governance of Faculties, Colleges, College Boards, Departments, Schools and Committees — with effect from 1 January 2011.

International House Council:
Senate appointed the following members of the International House Council for the terms of office specified — commencing on 1 January 2011:
- Professor M Harris (to 31 December 2011)
- Ms P Pritchard (to 31 December 2013)
- Mr K Kang (to 31 December 2011)
- Ms S-W Wong (to 31 December 2011)

Juris Doctor:
Senate resolved to revoke its earlier decision to place a cap on the number of domestic commencing fee-paying places for the Juris Doctor, noting that this issue would be handled through normal University processes.

Law Extension Committee:
Senate approved the appointment of the following members of the Law Extension Committee for a period of two years — from 1 December 2010: Mr Ross Anderson, Associate Professor Cameron Stewart, Dr Gregory Tolhurst, Justice Paul Brereton, Ms Janet Oakley, Professor Derrick Armstrong, Mr Antoine Goarin, Mrs Daphne Kok and Professor Ann Brewer.

Power of Attorney:
Senate approved recommendations relating to Power of Attorney granted to Mr Colin Rockliff (Director, Campus Infrastructure Services) and Mr Mark Easson (Chief Financial Officer).

Selection Committee for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy & Services):
Senate appointed the following memebrs of the Selection Committee for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy & Services):
- Two nominees of Senate: Professors Belinda Bennett and Margaret Harris.
- One additional member on the nomination of the Chair of the Board: Associate Professor Ngiare Brown
- One member, external to the University, on the nomination of the Vice-Chancellor: Mr Tom Calma

Student Disciplinary Appeals Committee:
Senate appointed the following members of the Student Disciplinary Appeals Committee:
- The Hon Brian Cohen QC (to 30 November 2012)
- Dr Roslyn Bohringer (to 31 May 2011)
- Ms Jane Needham (to 30 November 2012)
- Mr Peter O’Loughlin (substitute) (to 30 November 2012)

Sydney University Sport and Fitness General Committee/ Management Committee:
Senate appointed the following members of the Sydney University Sport and Fitness General Committee/ Management Committee for a period of one year — from 1 January 2011: Mr Alan Williamson, Ms Jasmin L’Estrange and Ms Anne Titterton.

University of Sydney Business School:
Senate gave approval in principle for the Faculty of Economics and Business to be renamed the University of Sydney Business School in January 2011, noting that the discipline of Economics, the Centre for International Security Studies and the Graduate School of Government – currently all in the Faculty of Economics and Business – will move to the Faculty of Arts, which will be renamed the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2000:
Senate approved amendments to the University of Sydney (Coursework) Rule 2000 (as amended), with an additional amendment, to complement the revised “plain English” resolutions for all coursework degrees in the University — with effect from 1 January 2011.

University of Sydney (Student Appeals against Academic Decisions) Rule 2006:
Senate approved the proposed amendment to the University of Sydney (Student Appeals against Academic Decisions) Rule 2006 (as amended) — effective from 10 December 2010.

University of Sydney Union Board of Directors:
Senate approved the reappointment of Ms Kaye Dening AM and Mr Sam Weiss as Senate representatives on the University of Sydney Union Board of Directors for a one year term of office — commencing on 1 January 2011.

University of Sydney Union Constitution:
Senate endorsed the proposed amendments to the University of Sydney Union Constitution.
