Since 2006, the University of Sydney's graduation ceremonies in China have been an annual event, shared between Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Guangzhou. The University held its first graduation ceremony in Guangzhou, China on 14 November 2007.

Graduation ceremony, 14 November 2007
The University's delegation to Guangzhou was led by the Chancellor, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, and received by the Governor of Guangdong Province and many senior colleagues.
The inaugural Guangzhou graduation ceremony was held on 14 November 2007 for graduates from the Pearl River Delta area - Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Macao.
Guest speaker Professor Yi-Xin Zheng, President, Sun Yat Sen University Cancer Centre, gave the occasional address.
Later, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, International (Professor John Hearn) and the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy (Professor Iqbal Ramzan) signed an agreement with their counterparts at Sun Yat Sen University for the establishment of a Centre for Research in Chinese Traditional Medicine. This Centre, which built on a collaborative research program between the two universities over the past ten years, would attract funds from the Chinese and Australian governments as well as from New South Wales and Guangdong as sister states.
