The University of Sydney recognises

  • exceptional achievement by conferring an honorary degree.
  • outstanding service to the University by awarding the title of Honorary Fellow of the University.

All honorary degree recipients - by degree

The names of all honorary degree recipients are listed below in honorary degree order and include:
– recipients of honorary degrees conferred before 1951 (these were ad eundem gradum degrees and this was before the University's legislation was amended in 1952 to confirm that the University could award honorary degrees); and
– all honorary award recipients from 1952.

*There was no provision before 1951 for conferring of honorary degrees by the University of Sydney. Therefore, until the 'University and University Colleges Act 1900' was amended confirming Senate's power to confer honorary degrees, the University awarded a number of degrees 'ad eundem gradum' - mostly Doctor of Laws - as a mark of honour. Those who received this award included members of the Royal Family, Governors-General, distinguished soldiers and leaders of industry.'
