His early life
Thomas Henry Coulson was born in Sydney, son of Thomas Coulson, and attended the Sydney College.
His student days at the University of Sydney
Thomas was 18 when he was admitted in the first cohort of students in 1852. He won a Scholarship in the December 1853 exams, but did not complete his studies.
Coulson became a merchant.
He was also a prize donor to the University. The Thomas Henry Coulson scholarship was founded in 1916 by a gift of 1000 pounds from the executors of the will of Miss Mary Jane Coulson, in memory of her brother. The scholarship is open to any postgraduate candidate enrolled in the Department of English at the University of Sydney to assist the candidate to undertake research overseas. The scholarship is awarded annually provided there is a candidate whose work is of sufficient merit.
