Aural Hallucinations

In this concert, Strelitzia explores the connection between sound and image, music and storytelling. Aural Hallucinations features four works, each with an element of visual interaction. In Elena Kats-Chernin’s evocative The Spirit and the Maiden, the Russian folk fairytale she depicts will be brought to life through the magical world of shadow puppetry. Alfred Schnittke’s captivating Piano Trio will be complemented by works by photographer Sarah Nguyen. Australian composer Jessica Wells wrote Intimate Waves as a response to her first pregnancy and her experience of having an ultrasound for the first time , and it is performed with accompanying visuals. Finally we will present the Australian premier of Paul Schoenfield’s Four Music Videos, an explosively virtuosic work which draws on popular music and MTV with the addition of a Digital SiGnal Processing display on screen triggered by our sounds.
