USSC National Summit

The 9/11 Decade: How Everything Changed

Two years on from 9/11 then-US Vice President Dick Cheney remarked how the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington “changed everything”, transforming forever the meaning of national security for the United States.

But 9/11 has also changed the world, from geopolitics, peace and stability, to freedom, democracy and human rights. It has also changed the global role and standing of the US, now understood as much for its vulnerabilities as its strengths, and criticised as much as admired.

Ten years on, and in ways Cheney could not have anticipated, it is clear that 9/11 has changed everything – but how?

Presented by the United States Studies Centre, the 2011 National Summit brings together government decision-makers past and present, thought leaders and academic experts from the US, Australia and from around the world to take stock of the first epoch of the new millennium, the 9/11 Decade.
