Schools Engagement Network

Terms of Reference

The Schools Engagement Network is intended to facilitate information sharing and communication between Faculties undertaking work with schools as part of Social Inclusion initiatives and/or widening participation strategies, Compass, and the Social Inclusion Unit.

The network will provide opportunities for relevant school updates, access to shared resources, and professional development opportunities that enhance school partnerships.

Calendar

Three meetings will be scheduled this year the first of which will be a training workshop on the new Working with Children/Child Safe Organisations Training.

Content to be covered in the meetings is listed below:

  1. Volunteering info, training and support
  2. Info-getting started / working with schools, including check list
  3. Evaluating for success
  4. Curriculum/content development
  5. Working with young children-primary school years
  6. Sustainability-maintaining relationships

19th July

Working with Children, delivered by Childsafe

There is new legislation that is being phased in and over the next five years everyone will have to have a Working with Children check. The University currently has draft guidelines in place for Working with Children policy and procedures and we will send out further information once these policies have been finalised.

The purpose of the next Schools engagement meeting is to meet people across faculties, central areas and the SIU Events team who are involved in schools outreach work.

Josephine Wilson will provide a brief run through of the new branding guidelines that will apply to any widening participation work that is being undertaken in schools. These new templates have been designed in conjunction with the new Compass brand and can be accessed via dropbox. If you do not have access to the network dropbox, please email for access invitation.

The other component to the meeting will be advice from the SIU events team on best practice, key contacts and strategies for organising school related events on Campus, and is intended as a helpful resource for anyone who is involved in future campus/school visits. There will also be some key presenters and facilitators who will be available to answer questions and provide information on how to frame and contextualise information for school aged audiences.

Mike and Sophie will present information on working with schools and L-SES communities and provide useful hints and tips on how to best access and communicate with schools, and their key personnel, along with information on how to identify schools to work with in Western Sydney.

A large component of the presentation will be on how to access volunteer training programs and resources for community/school engagement projects that have already been developed by the Compass team and are available for others. All resources can be accessed via dropbox. If you do not have access to the network dropbox, please email for access invitation.
