Postgraduate/Early Career Researcher Workshop
The 12th International Conference on Thai Studies will be held at the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia from 22 to 24 April 2014. There will be a workshop on 21 April 2014 on the campus of the University of Sydney inconjunction with the main conference, specifically designed for postgraduate (MA and PhD) students and Early Career Researchers (researchers who finished their PhDs within the last five years).
The purpose of the workshop will be to provide researchers who are early in their careers, and whose research touches on Thailand the chance to receive professionalization training and intensive feedback on their work from senior scholars who are not at their home universities. Participants will also have the chance to network with other researchers who study Thailand in Australia, Thailand, and beyond.
The workshop will have two types of sessions, depending on interest and submissions from participants:
- Professionalization seminars – Senior faculty will give seminars with advice on the following:
a. Publishing in international journals
b. Writing up a thesis chapter
c. Writing a research grant proposal
d. Oral presentations of research
- Intensive feedback sessions – Senior faculty will give individualized feedback on work submitted in the following categories:
a. Thesis chapters
b. Drafts of papers for publication (either a book chapter for an edited volume or a journal article)
c. Material for oral presentation (including both notes and Powerpoint slides, where relevant)
d. Research grant proposals
Conditions for participation
All postgraduate students and early career researchers who wish to participate in the workshop must submit a piece of writing well in advance (a thesis chapter, draft book chapter or journal article, material for oral presentation, or research grant proposal) for feedback. There is no additional cost for participation.
Researchers interested in participating in the workshop should sign up by 1 October 2013.
For the purposes of giving the senior scholars enough time to review the writing sample, written work for the workshop must be submitted by 1 March 2014.
