Professional development courses

There is a staged program of workshops and courses to support academic staff in their teaching. See the Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) pages on Professional Development for more information.

Teaching staff who have undertaken the Graduate Certificate in Higher Education, which is offered by ITL through the Faculty of Education and Social Work, have found it to be of great benefit, giving them more insight into learning and teaching processes, as well as the opportunity to develop a network of collegial support across the University.

Learning Solutions provides a number of professional development programs that are free for University staff and relevant to your role as a coordinator. These include courses such as:

  • Building Effective Teams
  • Personal Effectiveness in Change
  • Dealing with Students in Distress
  • Career Management.

The Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) also offers professional development courses, including courses on the following topics:

  • Communication in the Workplace: Strategies for Success
  • Emotional Intelligence in the Workplace
  • Speaking Skills for Scientists and Technical Experts

Online resources for teachers and coordinators

Of course, our FYE website is designed precisely to help you find resources to support you as a teacher and coordinator. In addition, there are a number of other very useful collections of resources brought together by faculties in the University that are likely to be relevant to many colleagues in coordination roles across the campus.

A wide range of information and resources aimed at enhancing science and mathematics teaching can be found on the UniServe Science website.

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Teaching and Learning website has some very useful links under the heading Resources for Academics, which you’ll probably find helpful regardless of your discipline area. You may also like to check their Academic Support links and resources.

Another valuable collection of resources has been put together under the Business School’s Learning and Teaching links for staff.

Working effectively with colleagues

As a coordinator of a unit of study you are generally required to manage and lead a team of colleagues. Some of these colleagues my be senior to you, or have very different ideas about teaching and learning. Occasionally you may find yourself in a situation in which you need to navigate your way through issues related to power relationships.

EO Online is an online professional development program in equal opportunity designed for all University staff. The course can help you to learn how to effectively deal with and prevent discrimination, as well as develop an understanding of your rights and responsibilities.

The Equal Opportunity Unit also offers a Leadership Development Program: Women in Leadership, which is designed to foster the development of women in leadership and management roles.


Teaching awards, grants and other funding

For a general overview of awards and grants for teaching, both within and beyond the University, see the ITL web pages Recognising Teaching Excellence: awards, grants and promotions. Under the heading Academic Promotions (Teaching) you will find information about ITL workshops designed to support promotion applicants.

When applying for teaching awards and promotions you will need to provide evidence of your teaching achievements. The ITL’s Teaching Insight: Sources of Evidence on Teaching which you will find on theirTeaching Insights page discusses sources for data that you can draw on to demonstrate these. Your faculty may also offer workshops that support teachers in applying for faculty specific awards. Check with your Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching (see the University Links feature pane, above, for a contact list).

Academic promotions

The Institute for Teaching and Learning also offers workshops designed to help you make a case for promotion on the basis of your teaching.

Promotions and performance

The University’s Performance Management and Development Program (PM&D) is designed to evaluate the performance of staff according to specified objectives. If you are a supervisor, you may be required to conduct reviews with your team, and you will also be required to attend your own performance review. Information about the process and useful resource links are provided on the webpage.

CareerPath is a software which enables staff to access career development and planning tools using a personalised web portal.
