Accommodation Options

There are many different options for where to live when studying at the University.
If it’s feasible, you can consider continuing to live with your parents or family. The campus is highly accessible by buses and trains, and its central location can mean a reasonable commute time.
If you want to move out of home, there are two basic options: on- and off-campus housing.

Off-campus housing
If you choose to live off campus, there are many factors to consider. Will you rent your own place? Will you board? Or would you prefer a share house?
You will also need to consider how much you are able to afford each week for rent (remembering you will also have food, bills, transport and entertainment costs). For a guide to all the expenses you may have, check out our weekly spending estimate.
Some suburbs you may be interested in researching are: Newtown, Glebe, Chippendale, Erskineville, Stanmore and Leichhardt (and all of their surrounding suburbs).
On-campus housing
If you decide you’d rather have the convenience of living on campus, there are a number of different options, including colleges, the Sydney University Village (SUV) and University-owned terraces.
The cost of staying in a college typically includes your (furnished) room, housekeeping and three meals a day.
Other on-campus options, such as SUV, are similar to share housing in that they have apartments in which you can live but you need to provide your own meals and cleaning etc.
Which option is best?
Every person is different so there is no “best” answer. But to help you determine what the best option is for you and your situation, you should:
- Research the options (the Accommodation Service is a great starting place)
- Talk to the experts of the Accommodation Service at Info Day.
- Remember you can change or move if you’re unhappy!
