You may have come across the term 'assumed knowledge' when researching your course options.

Assumed knowledge is what we expect you to know or what subjects we expect you to have studied before you begin your course. Make sure you check the courses database if there are assumed knowledge subjects for your course.

When you start your first day at the University, we’ll assume you have completed the assumed knowledge for your courses. Our academics may refer to formulas or theories from those subjects in your classes and if you haven’t completed them you may be at a disadvantage.

If your course has an assumed knowledge subject that you have not completed, you may wish to consider a bridging course to bring your knowledge up to speed.

The University offers bridging courses in the following areas:

Bridging courses are typically run during January and February.

Mathematics

Many first-year units assume a certain level of mathematical knowledge. Students without the assumed knowledge are permitted to enrol but are likely to experience difficulties unless they undertake additional study in preparation. The University runs the following courses in February:

Mathematics Extension 1 course – for students who have completed HSC Mathematics and who propose to enrol in higher-level mathematics units that have an assumed knowledge of Mathematics Extension 1.

Mathematics course – for students who have not completed HSC Mathematics and propose to enrol in first-year programs such as Architecture, Commerce or Economics which have an assumed knowledge of HSC Mathematics.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Course aims are to develop an understanding of basic scientific concepts and a scientific way of thinking. They are designed to assist students who have not studied these subjects at an appropriate HSC level, or who have not studied them for some time. While bridging courses may be strongly recommended for commencing students, they are not prerequisites.
