International arrival sessions

Date: Friday, 21 July, Thursday 27 July or Thursday, 3 August 2017

Time: 1:30 - 3:30pm (Fri 21 & Thurs 27 July) or 3:30 - 5:30pm (Thurs 3 Aug)

Location: Eastern Avenue Auditorium (Fri 21 & Thurs 27 July); Rooms 514 & 516, Level 5, Jane Foss Russell Building (Thurs 3 Aug)

For both UG and PG students, this session will help you get settled in Sydney by giving you information and resources to ensure your first few weeks run as smoothly as possible. Hear from representatives of services available to students including the library, ICT, USU, SRC and SUPRA, Careers, Security, Accommodation and many others. You're also invited to join the University of Sydney Union (USU) for a free campus tour, which will leave from outside the venue at the conclusion of the session. Sessions are repeated but students only need to attend one.

International Student Welcome (Combined Undergraduate & Postgraduate Full-Degree Students)

The International Student Welcome officially introduces new international students to the University of Sydney community. The program will help to familiarise you with life in Sydney, provide an opportunity to experience traditional Australian culture and allow you to get to know other students. Afterwards you are invited to a BBQ lunch hosted by Sydney University Sport and Fitness followed by an afternoon of sporting activities. Please arrive early to ensure you get a seat.

Hosted by Sydney University Sports and Fitness, the BBQ provides you the opportunity to tour the gym and sports facilities at the University, try out some activities and enjoy a good old Aussie sausage sizzle! Come along after your formal welcome.

Accessing Healthcare in Australian for International Students

The healthcare system in Australia may be a little different to what you are used to at home. Join us to hear about services available in Australia and how to access them, including informaiton about your OSHC, free services, likely costs and sexual health services.

Newly arrived to Sydney and have questions about campus, accommodation, banking, where to find food? Or, would you like to chat to a fellow international student who has been in your shoes? Drop in to meet the International Student Officer and International Student Representatives and ask them (almost*) anything!  Representatives can take you on a tour of campus, help you find a great cup of coffee, answer your questions or, just say "Hi! Welcome to Sydney." Drop in at any time during the session. *We are not able to advise on enrolment, timetables or fees. Some sessions will include set tour times so be sure to plan ahead.

Sydney Day Trip

ODay 

Date: Monday, 31 July 2017 

Time: 10am - 4pm

Location: Eastern Avenue 

ODay is a one day festival held on Day 1 of Semester 2 each year to welcome international students to the University and to also welcome back those who are returning. This year, ODay will be held on Monday 31st July. ODay will take place on Eastern Ave and a section of the Front Lawns. ODay provides an opportunity for new students to join the USU and any number of our 200 Clubs & Societies. It introduces them to the world that exists outside the classroom and an endless range of co-curricular activities and events.

 

Study Abroad & Exchange Student Welcome

Attendance is compulsory.

International students commencing through the Study Abroad and Exchange programs are officially welcomed to the University of Sydney community. The program will help to familiarise you with life in Sydney, provide an opportunity to experience traditional Australian culture and allow you to get to know other students. Lunch will be served following the welcome prior to the afternoon enrolment sessions.

 

Postgraduate welcome

Date: Monday, 24 July 2017

Time: 6 - 8:30pm

Location: The Great Hall, The Quadrangle

Join us for a welcome and information session for commencing research and coursework students, followed by an informal social event organised by Student Support Services. Come along and meet your fellow postgraduate students and staff from key areas at the University. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about life and postgraduate study after the formal welcome is complete at the reception attended by academic faculty representives and staff from Student Support Services, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Learning Centre, Library, Security, SUPRA and the University of Sydney Union (USU).

The Mentoring Program Welcome Day

Date: Monday, 24 July 2017

Location: MacLaurin Hall, The Quadrangle

The Mentoring Program matches you with a senior student Mentor who will introduce you to university. On Welcome Day, you'll meet your Mentor for the first time, as well as staff in the Faculty and other first year students studying the same subjects as you. You'll go on a campus tour, attend talks and workshops to help you succeed at uni, and get answers to all your questions about starting your studies. Postgraduate Welcome

Location: General Lecture Theatre, The Quadrangle 

At your Postgraduate Welcome you'll find out essential information about starting your study and get the opportunity to meet other students and staff in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The program starts with an information session on succeeding in your postgraduate study. You'll then attend a formal welcome in the historic Great Hall, Quadrangle Building, where you'll network with staff and students in your area of study over refreshments and music. Campus at Dusk is a catch-up orientation program held in the evening during Week 1 for students who missed Orientation Week. You'll learn critical information about your study, attend workshops to help you succeed at uni, and meet staff and other Arts and Social Sciences students. At this session you will have the opportunity to learn about the Faculty and important information to help you start your new course. You will also have the chance to meet other students and seek academic advice from lecturers and year coordinators. The Undergraduate FEIT Tour is your chance to find all your lecture and tutorial locations, book stores, coffee, and study spaces. The tour will start at 3pm and be offered every 30 minutes (e.g. 3pm, 3:30pm, 4pm, and 4:30pm). Meet at the Engineering Link Lawn near the Tours sign and check the list of tours on the day. Last tour starts at 4:30pm and concludes at 5:00pm.

Orientation Program

The Orientation Program is held over two days. International coursework masters students must attend both days. The program includes an introduction to: Australian legal system; Statutory interpretation and common law method; Common law and legal method in Australia; Legal research, writing, assessment and avoiding plagiarism; Law library and legal research; and University learning support services. The program also serves as a social orientation to the Law School and provides all commencing students with an opportunity to meet one another as well as members of Sydney Law School.
