Investment and Capital Management

Investment and Capital Management is charged with managing the University of Sydney’s endowment and trust assets, investment funds and commercial real estate investments.

The objective of the ICM is to enhance the overall wealth and fiscal capacity of the University through the adoption and implementation of investment and capital management best practice.

Given the perpetual nature of the University's donated funds, ICM seeks to generate an optimal risk-adjusted total return through the employment of a structured long-term investment philosophy based around strategic asset allocation targets.

Between 1995 and 2007, the University of Sydney's Investment Portfolio experienced strong growth in market value. The deepening of the global financial crisis in 2008, together with substantial capital development expenditures from operating funds, resulted in a reversal of that trend. The University’s Long Term Funds performance, however, compares very favourably against both Australian superannuation funds, and our nominated Statutory benchmark (NSW T-Corp Long-Term Growth Facility). The University’s performance also compares favourably against the median return of the US based endowments and foundations over the one and three year period.
