Sign up to be an academic, professional or student member of the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre

As a member, you’ll be the first to receive invitations to our events and information tailored to suit your research area and countries of interest.

The academic, professional and student categories of membership are open to staff and students of The University of Sydney. Individuals from other institutions are invited to apply for associate membership in the relevant category.

Please read the information below on membership options and what the options entitle you to.

Membership types

To qualify for student membership you must:

  • be enrolled in an undergraduate, Honours, postgraduate coursework, Research Masters, or PhD program at The University of Sydney working on one or more of the countries of Southeast Asia.

Student members will:

  • be eligible to participate in relevant events
  • be eligible to apply for the Sydney Southeast Asia Centre Conference Fund
  • receive the quarterly newsletter and targeted student communications.

Associate student members will:

  • be given priority access to relevant events
  • receive the quarterly newsletter and targeted student communications.

To qualify for academic membership you must:

  • be employed on a full-time, part-time or casual basis, or hold an honorary position at The University of Sydney;
  • have publications or grants relating to one or more of the countries in Southeast Asia, or significant engagement in capacity building or similar activities.

Academic members will:

  • receive the academic bulletin, quarterly newsletter and targeted communications;
  • be eligible to apply for Sydney Southeast Asia Centre grants;
  • be publicly listed as a member on our website;
  • be eligible to participate in relevant events.

Associate academic membership

  • to qualify for associate academic membership you must:
  • be an academic engaged in research on Southeast Asia from a university other than the University of Sydney OR, an academic at The University of Sydney from a Southeast Asian country who is not actively engaged in research, teaching or capacity building related to Southeast Asia.

Associate academic members will:

  • receive the academic bulletin, quarterly newsletter and targeted communications;
  • be given priority access to relevant events.

To qualify for professional membership you must:

  • be employed on a full-time, part-time or casual basis by The University of Sydney;
  • be an administrator on a project in which knowledge about The University of Sydney’s engagement with Southeast Asia is important, or have a demonstrated interest in the region.

Professional members will:

  • receive the quarterly newsletter
  • be eligible to participate in relevant events

Associate professional membership

To qualify for associate professional membership you must be:

  • employed by a non-academic institution (i.e. business, government, media)
  • involved in a project in which knowledge about Southeast Asia is important.

Associate professional members will:

  • be given priority access to relevant events;
  • receive the quarterly newsletter.
