General Staff Travelling Scholarship

Purpose

The General Staff Travelling Scholarship is a new initiative to provide general staff with learning and professional development opportunities in an international environment. The scholarship will allow general staff to:

  • Collaborate with international colleagues and strengthen links between the University of Sydney and other universities/institutions.
  • Undertake practical experience and/or specialised project work which expands on activities available within the University
  • Benchmark current services and practices
  • Investigate administrative best practice (e.g. policies, systems, procedures)

Eligibility

The Scholarship is open to all members of continuing general staff, HEO Level 7 and above, who are currently employed at 0.6 FTE or higher FTE and have been at the University for a minimum of two years.

If you have been awarded this Scholarship in the previous three year period, you are ineligible to re-apply.

About the Scholarship

  • A maximum of four Travelling Scholarships for General staff will be awarded per annum. The University reserves the right not to award the Scholarship/s if applications do not align with the strategic intent and priorities of the University of Sydney.
  • Each Scholarship is worth a maximum of $10,000. This amount is inclusive of travel (economy fare only), agreed and validated expenses and accommodation. You will be expected to provide a full budget that details the estimated costs of travel as part of your application. Scholarship recipients will be required to manage their scholarship funds during their trip. Each scholarship is available for up to 12 months from award of the scholarship. Any unspent funding will be used to fund future scholarships.
  • Each scholarship is for a maximum of up to three months duration per annum.

Expectations

  • You will have read The University of Sydney Strategic Plan 2011 – 2015 and aligned your application to one or more Strategic Priorities.
  • You will be an excellent ambassador for the University of Sydney. Interaction with colleagues at other universities/institutions should foster and promote ongoing collaboration with established exchange partnerships and develop new collaborations from which future scholars and exchange students will benefit.
  • You will be required to have confirmation from each of the host institutions you will be visiting that they agree to your proposal. For the purposes of your application, copies of initial correspondence with the host institution/s will be sufficient. If you are awarded the scholarship, confirmation (by email or letter) will be required prior to the scholarship being finalised.
  • At the completion of your University of Sydney Travelling Scholarship you will be expected to submit a full written report and give a presentation to interested staff.

Step 2 Approval Process: Applications must be supported and signed by:

  • your immediate supervisor
  • your Head of School/Administrative Unit
  • your Dean or equivalent

Selection Criteria

The selection will be based on an assessment of the following: Application Guidelines

Project proposal: Describe your project

Project plan defining purpose, objectives, scope and outcomes (1 page summary, other supporting documents may be provided).

Strategic alignment: Outline how the proposed project aligns with one or more of the University’s Strategic priorities

Clear alignment of the proposal against one or more of the strategic priorities Explain how your project will benefit yourself, your Faculty/Unit and the wider University community.
Why you have chosen this host institution/s? Recognised best practice leader in the area of proposed study or research. Substantiate why you have chosen this host institution/s to undertake your project.  Please attach your initial correspondence with the institution/s.  If you are awarded the scholarship, a formal letter of invitation will be required prior to the scholarship being finalised.

  • Director, Human Resources (or nominee)
  • DVC, Strategic Planning (or nominee)
  • Faculty representative (as nominated by the Provost’s office)
