What is a KPA?
KPAs are broad areas of expected performance that are directly linked to and, contribute to, the achievement of the University’s goals.
Refer to information and examples of Academic and General staff KPAs.
What is a KPI?
‘Key Performance Indicators’ (KPIs) are the measures (evidence) by which an individual can demonstrate they have met their Objectives.
Refer to examples of measures or KPIs.
What is an Objective?
Objectives describe something to be accomplished over a period of time. They can be expressed as targets to be met, or tasks to be completed, by specified dates. They will relate to the overall purpose of the job and direction of the unit. SMART objectives are those which are:
- Specific - Explicit, clear and concise
- Measurable - Quantifiable (quality, quantity, time and/or cost)
- Achievable - Challenging yet attainable (eg given time/resources); motivating
- Relevant - Related to the position; staff member has control over the outcome
- Time framed - Checkpoints/milestones and target completion date
Should there be a learning and development activity for each objective?
No, it is only necessary to list development activities where there is a genuine learning and development need. There may be as few as one objective that will have a learning development activity.
Does the plan only include development for the current role?
No, learning and development for both the current role and future roles must be considered. While the development for the current roles will take priority, development for future roles is important for the individual and the organisation.
