Writing PM&D Objectives

What you are aiming to do in writing objectives for your PM&D plan (Part C) is to agree with your reviewer:

  • what you will be expected to achieve over the next 12 months;
  • how you will measure that performance, and;
  • what development you need to meet those objectives.

What can help you to write PM&D objectives?

Here are some tips:

  • A conversation with your reviewer about what they expect. Check with them whether they have any particular format that they prefer you to use. It can be useful to write one objective and check with your reviewer whether it is what they are looking for.
  • A unit plan if there is one. Any strategic document setting out the direction of the team you are working in will help you shape your own PM&D objectives.
  • An up to date position description if you have one.
  • Attendance at the ½ day training session Making the most of your PM&D.

What are the qualities of a good PM&D objective?

The objectives you write should help you:

  • to identify how your activities contribute to achieving the university’s goals, your unit’s goals and your own goals over the next 12 months (or for the period of probation);
  • to ensure that you are clear about the expectations of your manager and clear about how those expectations will be assessed.

You are aiming to create statements that are:

S - Specific

M - Measurable

A - Achievable

R - Relevant

T - Time framed
