Classification of positions
General Staff Classification Assessment
The classification assessment process measures the value of a specific position to the University. This ensures positions of similar value are paid equitably and can be compared to similar external positions to determine market competitive pay.
All positions (new and classification reassessments) are to be classified according to the University of Sydney Enterprise Agreement 2009-2012, Part D, EA cl 79-96. The Classification Assessment Team (CAT) meets regularly to classify position descriptions against the position assessment descriptors (found in Schedule 2 of the Enterprise Agreement).
General Staff Position Descriptions
All general staff positions require a position description, to be written using the Position Description template (download from the HR Forms website, in Word 2007 and Word 2003 formats). It includes the purpose and context of the position, duties and responsibilities required, degree of task complexity, scope for decision making, level of knowledge experience and skills required, and the relationship of the position to other positions within the organization.
The Overview of Classification Assessment, Workflow and Division of Responsibility document outlines the process and will assist you in understanding your responsibilities and the timeline.
If you require further information about classification assessment, requesting a classification, or preparing position descriptions, please contact your HR Advisor. The Position Description Writing Guide is available to assist with writing effective position descriptions within the Univeristy.
