2016: Year of change

Approval has been granted for the continuation of USIMS for the next 5 years, along with a new name and focus. USIMS will now be identified as the University of Sydney Marine Studies Institute (MSI)

The oceans cover nearly three quarters of the earth’s surface and play a crucial role in sustaining life on our planet. They provide essential services that support economic well being and human health. But though our understanding of the marine environment has rapidly increased, there is still much to understand and explore.

Sydney University hosts many nationally and internationally recognised research groups spanning 10 disciplines, with more than 30 lecturers and over 100 postgraduate students. USIMS is amongst the largest marine research and education centres in Australia, providing exciting study opportunities and career options. The University of Sydney has significant marine infrastructure, including laboratories, boating facilities and both temperate and tropical field stations.

USIMS offers a multidisciplinary undergraduate major in marine science, with subjects offered by the School of Biology and School of Geosciences, and a range of postgraduate programs in marine science, including the cross-institutional SIMS Master of Marine Science and Management programme. The University of Sydney’s well-established marine science capability has seen it repeatedly ranked in the top tier of the QS World University Rankings. USIMS aims to support the University’s marine activities in Science, Law, Veterinary, Engineering, and Environment Faculties by promoting innovative, world-class teaching, research and community engagement.
