University of Sydney ranked 16th for Earth & Marine Sciences
The 2012 QS World University Rankings has placed Sydney
University in 16th place for Natural Sciences: Earth and Marine Sciences, which is one place better than last year (see item below). Geography ranked 24th so the School of Geosciences has done very well!

The latest rankings from QS World University Rankings have just been published for Physics and Environmental Science. The University of Sydney comes in equal 17th (tied with Yale) for the subject Earth and Marine Sciences.

The 2009 program for the University of the Sea / Université de la Mer has closed. The University of the Sea is a partnership between the University of Sydney, Intergovernmental ceanographic Commission of UNESCO & many other Universities & research centres in the Australasian & Indo-Pacific region. The University of the Sea is dedicated to building marine science capacity in the Asia Pacific region & aims to bring together senior researchers & young local scholars to address marine science issues of direct interest to their region. This is the second seminar in the series and features three speakers, each presenting for 15 minutes followed by a 5-10 minute Q&A.
The speakers are:
Tim Stephens (Co-Director, Sydney Centre for International Law) - The Great Barrier Reef at a crossroads
Will Figueira (Marine Ecology Laboratories Centre for Research on Ecological Impacts of Coastal Cities School of Biological Sciences) - Marine Park Connectivity
Ana Vila-Concejo (Geocoastal Research Group, School of Geosciences) - Sediment mixing depth in sand aprons in coral reef environments

Come along to this session to hear Dr Jody Webster, from the School of Geosciences, discuss where his multidisciplinary research in the architecture and formation of coral reefs has taken him.
Marc Daley, a Sydney Marine Science PhD graduate will also be speaking about how he applies his knowledge and research to his current role as a Coastal Adviser for the NSW Government Office of Environment and Heritage.

Research in Marine Science can take you to the most remote and exotic locations on the planet. “Focus on Marine Science” is a snapshot of the work marine scientists at the University of Sydney are currently conducting. 3-7 July 2011: AMSA Annual Conference
Australian Marine Science Association (AMSA) 2011 Annual Conference will be held in Fremantle, WA from 3-7 July 2011 at the Esplanade Hotel, with the theme of "Crossing Boundaries".
This year's program will include eight General Sessions:

- GS2 - Coastal Processes
- GS3 - Marine conservation (including marine protected area planning)
