2010 Ian Beveridge Memorial Lecture

Professor John Edwards

One Health - Turning Theory into Practice by Professor John Edwards.

The ‘One World-One Health’ initiative has achieved high level global agreement. It recognises that ‘One Health’ approaches are needed to prevent and respond to emerging infectious diseases. It is widely recognised that this is the correct approach and will result in more efficient and effective outcomes. However, there are significant barriers to implementation in practice. This presentation describes the need to overcome the barriers by using integrated and cooperative approaches and a culture of ‘One Health’ among professionals at all levels at the animal-human-environmental interface.

With more than 60% of all new human disease emerging from animals and particular risks in our region due to intensification of agriculture and loss of wildlife habitats, this talk will provide important insights into future directions for surveillance and disease control.

About the Lectures

Professor Ian Beveridge

Emeritus Professor William Ian Beveridge was an alumnus of the University of Sydney, graduating in 1931. His celebrated working life was devoted to fighting disease. Whilst he began his career combating diseases in animals at the University of Cambridge, he quickly understood the importance of 'one medicine' and devoted much of his later career with the World Health Organisation understanding diseases that affect both human beings and animals. In 1972 Prof Beveridge published a book, Frontiers in Comparative Medicine, outlining his views in this area of science.

The Ian Beveridge Memorial Lectures, which reflect the Beveridge principle of One Medicine, were founded by a bequest from Ian Beveridge. We are delighted that the Ian Beveridge Memorial Lecture for 2010 will be presented by Professor John Edwards, whose lecture is titled “One Health - Turning Theory into Practice”.
