Welcome to the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney - Professor Rosanne Taylor
Our Faculty offers an outstanding environment for learning, discovery and service that embraces our students, staff, external partners and Veterinary Teaching Hospital clients. Since 1910 we have prepared our graduates to make remarkable contributions to their chosen professions.
Our core strength is our exceptional staff. Their dedicated work improves animal health, wellbeing and productivity and contributes to the unique roles of our profession in protecting human health, food supply and societal wellbeing. This work is more valuable than ever as veterinarians and animal scientists are increasingly acknowledged as playing vital roles in addressing the big issues the world faces - food security, animal conservation, control of emerging disease and protecting the health and welfare of animals.
We strive to provide the very best education in veterinary and animal science through bachelor’s degrees, postgraduate coursework, continuing education and research training. Our alumni have shaped our professions locally, nationally and globally. Their sustained, stellar achievements in practice, public service, research, academia and the media provide the best advertisement for the success of our programs.
All our students are supported to develop their leadership skills and veterinary interests through academic and co-curricular activities. Campus life in both Sydney and Camden provides unique opportunities for personal growth, networking and exploration of career directions. We support and guide our students as they learn and help them to meet the challenges of student life.
Veterinary Science is part of the University of Sydney’s rich tradition of excellence in pursuit of intellectual discovery. Our research portfolio is world class, enriched by our links with the University’s research leaders in health sciences, science and agriculture and our mature collaborations with government and industry research organizations. The mix of heritage and new buildings on our Camperdown campus and our rural campus at Camden reflect our history and ongoing renewal. Our farms, laboratories, hospitals, lecture theatres, computer facilities and accommodation provide well equipped venues for cutting-edge research, teaching and clinical practice.
Our Veterinary Teaching Hospitals provide world-class clinical services and have the latest technology for the care of companion animals, wildlife, livestock and horses. These facilities allow us to train the next generation of veterinary practitioners and specialists.
The Faculty’s teachers and teaching programs have achieved acclaim for their quality and effectiveness. Our programs are distinctive because they engage students in active, practical learning and develop the essential attributes of independent scholarship and inquiry. Starting with a sound basis in practical animal handling and management, the BAnVetBioSc degree develops outstanding scientific analytical, quantitative, computing and communication skills. From 2014, we will be embarking on an exciting new program to replace the BVSc; we will be offering a combined Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, our growing suite of postgraduate coursework programs in veterinary and animal science enables graduates to accelerate their career progression and research potential. Graduate entry into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine will commence in 2015.
A career in veterinary or animal science offers remarkable opportunities and benefits and we are dedicated to providing graduates with the best preparation for success. When you study with us you will also enjoy the great life that Sydney offers as a global city in a wonderful location.
