Charles Darwin in Australia by F.W. and J.M. Nicholas
Alterations to Darwin's Original 1836 Diary
When Darwin was preparing his Diary for publication as the 1839 Journal, he made many editorial and other changes. When the second edition (1845 Journal) was being prepared, he made further changes.
The lists present all of the important changes that were made in the preparation of both editions, including those changes described in the main text. Minor editorial changes that did not alter Darwin's meaning have not been included.
Readers are reminded that the changes made in preparation for the 1839 Journal were probably made no later than June 1837; publication of the first edition of Darwin's Journal was delayed because the companion volumes by King and FitzRoy were not ready until 1839.
