Biographical details
Mike has been involved in the development of aquaculture and stock enhancement techniques for Australian native marine and freshwater fishes for over 25 years. From 1987 to 2006 he worked for the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, based at Northern Fisheries Centre in Cairns. In this position he was instrumental in the development of practical aquaculture technology for barramundi (Lates calcarifer), which is now the principal aquacultured finfish in northern Australia. More recently, he has been involved in developing aquaculture technology for high-value marine finfish such as snappers (Lutjanidae) and groupers (Serranidae). Although Mike has broad interests in aquaculture, his research has largely been focussed on larval rearing of tropical marine finfish, including aspects of larval nutrition and the development of low-cost seedstock production technologies.
Mike has undertaken numerous collaborative studies with laboratories in the US, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, India, and several Pacific Island countries. He has been project leader / manager for five ACIAR projects, including two projects to improve hatchery and grow-out technology for high-value marine finfish aquaculture in the Asia-Pacific region. From 2006 to 2010 he was based in Aceh, Indonesia, managing an ACIAR-funded project supporting rehabilitation of coastal aquaculture in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. Since 2010 he has been based in Makassar, Indonesia, managing a University of Sydney project funded by ACIAR to improve the productivity of coastal aquaculture ponds in South Sulawesi and Aceh provinces.
