Information For Prospective BVetBio/DVM International Students

The Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Sydney has received further international recognition with accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

Sydney now joins an elite group of vet schools outside North America which have already achieved this status. It is only the third veterinary school in Australasia to reach this standard.

The accreditation comes from the AVMA's Council on Education, which is recognised by the US Department of Education and acts as the accrediting agency for some 30 faculties of veterinary medicine in the United States and Canada.

BVetBiol/DVM International applicants

International applicants will be assessed on the basis of academic performance, results in a standardized examination (STAT, ISAT or GRE®) and their demonstration of a commitment to the health and welfare of animals.

Academic Performance: International students must have achieved a similar standard to that expected of an Australian student seeking entry. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their academic achievement in their final year of secondary education (Year 12 or equivalent) or their tertiary studies as appropriate, from a recognized University.
Minimum GPA required is 2.80 on a 4.00 scale, however applicants must demonstrate an aptitude for science based study.

Standardized examinations:
All off-shore international applicants are required to take the International Student Admission Test (ISAT) (Applicants may submit GRE® scores in lieu of ISAT scores.)

All on-shore international applicants are required to take the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). Contact the Universities Admission Centre to make an appointment to sit the Multi-choice version.

Additional requirements and considerations: Applicants are also expected to have gained relevant work experience and animal handling. This should be demonstrated on the Commitment to Veterinary Science form. Go to the following website to download the form.

Off-shore international applicants should submit their completed “Commitment to Veterinary Science” along with their STAT, ISAT or GRE® results to the International Office upon application.

If you are an international student sitting an Australian Year 12 examination in Australia you should apply and sit the STAT through the Universities Admission Centre and submit your Commitment Statement to the Faculty of Veterinary Science (see address on bottom of Commitment Statement).

All other international student applicants should obtain an application form from:
